The bus

Dad is coming home using (a/the) bus.

Here I was talking to my son, and he knows what a bus is, but never knew if his dad is using a bus.
When I first said this, I said "the bus" refering those buses I see everyday. Then, I wasn't sure if this way of use is correct. Wan't I wrong?

Thank you for correcting me.

I should've mentioned that I know this expression already. here my question is something different regarding the article.
Can you go over once more and check which one works for the context?

You can say "on a bus" or "on the bus" as well as "by bus".
