The both/both

Hi ,

Can we use "the both" anywhere in a context .Please tell me the difference between"the both" & "both" in usage.I would appreciate your help.

I have seen or heard it quite a few times but I have never seen it discussed in a grammar book! My Helsinki English ear might accept a phrase with of. Something like this: ...

Something like this: ... and then the both of them went out. There is absolutely no grammatical need for the even in that context: ... and then both of them / they both went out.

I agree - but it's used to add emphasis sometimes. Go on, get out! The both of you! Out!

There's no need for it. I think I would use it only in direct address. I would be far less likely to say "the both of them went out" than "the both of you can kiss my shiny metal ..."
