"the bond" vs "the bonds"

We are formulating a theme for a certain sporting event. The theme is "Playing to Unify and Strengthen bonds between OFWs." Someone objected to that saying it should be "playing to unify and strengthen the bond between OFWs"

In my opinion, using bonds/the bonds are both okay. However, I take issue in the usage of "the bond" since there are more than 2 OFWs (overseas Filipino workers) involved in this event.

"The bond" might be correct if there are only two parties, as in:
This event is meant to strengthen the bond between husband and wife. Whereas "the bonds" is used as in the following example: This event is meant to strengthen the bonds between Jewish couples.

Am I correct in my assumption?

Also I prefer the theme this way: "playing to unify and strengthen bonds between OFWs" -- without the the because there are many different relationships existing between these people (friends, relatives, colleagues, church-mates, house-mates, etc). So, is without the the more appropriate or should we include it?

Thanks so much.

  • On the contrary, I would prefer 'bonds' because even only two individuals have more than one bond between them: loyalty, commitment, candor, friendship, responsibility, etc.
  • maiagarri Also I prefer the theme this way: "playing to unify and strengthen bonds between OFWs" 'The' is indeed unnecessary.
