...the birds which he provides sanctuary for...

...the birds for which he provides snactuary...

Just wondering if the are equally correct and natural?

The second one sounds a bit stiff, but it's certainly correct. You can also just omit the "which" and use the first version: The birds he provided santuary for...

Yes, if there is only one bird, or if you have previously talked about two birds, one in his santuary and one elsewhere.

It also tells you that the bird is there now. In your other sentences, I had the impression they may have been released.
