What is the difference in meaning between these sentences?

- The birds flew the trees.
- The birds flew up the trees.
- The birds flew up over the trees.

The birds can fly over, above, or into the trees. (They can't "fly the trees".)

If you want to emphasize upward motion, you may add up. up is optional.

The birds flew (up) [over / above / into] the trees.
