"The" before a job title?

Hi all,

I've been wondering if it's correct to write, for example: Michael Jones, the neurosurgeon, performed an operation..? I mean is that "the" article correct? What about, when one writes about several people, for example: Tim Douglas and Caroline Smith, the psychiatrists, are of the opinion..?

Thanks a lot!

Thanks Clive. However, I actually meant situations when you as a writer simply want to state someone's title. For example, "Mary Smith, the physician, works at Charity Hospital". (Lets imagine that there are a lot of physicians working at the same hospital.) Should I then use 'a' or 'the'? Or no article at all?
