Overall, the proportion of companies using social media increased throughout the period. In addition, the percentage of large businesses is higher than small and medium companies over the period.
Regarding the percentage of small and medium companies which used social media, while the former rose from roughly 27% to approximately 35%, the latter went up significantly from just above 31% to slightly under 50%. After both types of businesses suffered a substantial drop in 2015 to around 30% but then witnessed an upward trend at the end of the period to around 50%.
Turning to the remaining type of companies, the figures maintained the same level at just under 80% from 2012 to 2016 except 2015. The large businesses had the media participation rate fell by nearly a third to a record of just over 50%
