The ball came apart

I was really at a loss for words yesterday when the tennis ball that I was playing cricket with came apart in two halves.
What verb should I use to describe a situation like this for different kinds of balls.

For golf balls I guess, "the ball broke" will do.
But what about the tennis balls or the table tennis balls ?
