(the) bags

Hi everyone,

I am stuck here.

The grocery store I went to daily was located several miles from my home, so I had to walk all the way back with the grocery bags.

Even though the bags weren't mentioned before, I put the definite article before 'grocery bags'. I think it's correct without it too, but every grocery trip USUALLY results in bags, so it's those bags that I had to bring back. It's clear to the reader.

But I am second-guessing myself...

MariaRC so I had to walk all the way back with the grocery bags. No problems here. I would keep "the".

"The" would be used here. By mentioning "grocery store" in the first part of the sentence, you are implying that you're going to come out of the store with grocery bags. So in the second part of the sentence you'd say "the grocery bags."

"Grocery bags (no definite article)" would also be correct. But the sentence sounds better with "the." This is more a question of rhythm and phrasi
