The bag was so heavy that he had to leave it for his father to carry [it].

Good morning againEmotion: smile

Which of the sentences below is correct?

1a) The bag was so heavy that he had to leave it for his father to carry.
1b) The bag was so heavy that he had to leave it for his father to carry it.

I am not sure how I can recognize when it is needed to add 'it'. Another simple examples:

Person A: What is quantum mechanics?
Person B: I don't know how to answer [it?] (this question).

Person A: Do you believe Tom is a thief?
Person B: I don't believe [it?].

Is there any rule of thumb for this?

  • I am not sure how I can recognize when it is needed to add 'it'.
  • Is there any rule of thumb for this?
  • Hi, Reegis.
  • I think in the first pair, you can say both.
  • If the first "it" refers to the labor of carrying the bag, you use "it" after "carry".
