The audience is/are the evaluators

Hello,

I have a question regarding how to know which noun to look at when deciding the plurality/singularity of the verb.

My sentence reads:

The audience in this case is/are the evaluators of the actions of the decision makers."

I would greatly appreciate your help.

The audience in this case are the evaluators of the actions of the decision makers. 'Audience' can be singular or plural depending on the verb action and on the speakers perception. In this case, the predicate noun 'evaluators' makes it clear that the speaker is thinking of all the individual members of the audience, and notional concord therefore calls for the plural.

  • The audience in this case are the evaluators of the actions of the decision makers.
  • 'Audience' can be singular or plural depending on the verb action and on the speakers perception.
  • In this case, the predicate noun 'evaluators' makes it clear that the speaker is thinking of all the individual members of the audience, and notional concord therefore calls for the plural.
