The articles for mural and fire.

Some teachers in my school were discussing about the marking scheme for our English paper. There were some sentences:

1. They are painting a mural on the wall.
2. They are putting out a fire.

For sentence #1, is the article required? Can I say "They are painting mural on the wall"?
For sentence #2, is the article correct or should I only say "the fire"?

Thank you, you are much appreciated for helping.

In #1, the article is necessary. "They are painting mural on the wall" is incorrect.

In #2, the indefinite article is correct. More context is required to determine if the definite article would be more appropriate. Are we talking about a specific fire?
