The article in front of a noun preceeded with an adjective

Hello everybody.

"I needed a red pencil and I took a pencil from the table. Using the red pencil was really cool."

1) Can I say "the red pencil" as the second mention of a pencil from the first sentence?

2) Does it say that that pencil or the usage of it is unique in some way? Or it says nothing of this kind and just refers to the pencil already introduced?

3) What's a difference in meaning here:

"I needed a red pencil and I took a pencil from the table. Using a red pencil was really cool."
?

Thanks in advance.
