The article 'AN' or 'A'?

Hi,

My english teacher had once taught us that when we are talking about a profession, the article 'a' should be used and according to her I should write my sentence as :

A electrical engineer is looking for a job.

For some strange reason, this doesn't sound natural to me. Is it grammatically correct or I should use the article 'an' instead?

Please help me because I need to make it grammtically correct.

Thank you.

You have to use the indefinite article AN. The form AN is used before a word beginning with a vowel or words beginning with a mute H: an hour, an apple, an island. The form A is used before a word beginning with a consonant, or a vowel with a consonant sound: a hat, a university, a European.

  • With abbreviations spoken with a vowel sound you have to use AN: an MP (M = em) an SOS (S = es) JK

Most student forget the actual statement of their teahcer and when they are grown-up, they start blaming. I don't think an English teacher can ever say like that. S/he must have said something else in this connection but you now confuse both.

Hello.

I think your English teacher may have meant that it is correct to say

"She is a nurse." NOT " She is nurse."

"He is a businessman." NOT "He is businessman." etc.
