Please help me with the following:

1) We have a pool that reaches to the middle of the garden - they have a river that has no end ( I'd use "the" as the speaker wants to show an opposition between generalized kinds: the pool - the river)

2)Our patio reaches to the front yard - they have a whole horizon ( I'd use "the" as there is the only one horizon in the world)

didiwantsomemore 1) We have a pool that reaches to the middle of the garden - they have a river that has no end ( I'd use "the" as the speaker wants to show an opposition between generalized kinds: the pool - the river) "a" is the natural choice in both positions. didiwantsomemore 2)Our patio reaches to the front yard - they have a whole horizon ( I'd use "the" as there is the only one horizon in the world) "a" and "the" are both possible. "the" is possible for the reason that you mention, but "a" can be explained by the fact that there are different horizons in different places.
