The application of pressure (as with the thumbs or fingertips) to the same discrete points

Hi

Could you please tell me that what the phrase "same discrete points" means in the definition below? To me, the occurrence of words "same" and "discrete" next to each other seems a little contradictory. Thanks.

acupressure
the application of pressure (as with the thumbs or fingertips) to the same discrete points on the body stimulated in acupuncture that is used for its therapeutic effects (as the relief of tension or pain)
[M-W's Col. Dic.]

Accupressure is a pseudoscience that maintains that there are points on the human body that correspond to concentrations of an imaginary "life force" called chi , and that pressing with the fingers on these points cures disease. Acupuncture is a similar pseudoscience, which relies on inserting needles into the same points for the same alleged effect. "Same discrete points" means that both acupressure and acupuncture concern themselves with the same spots on the human body.

  • "Discrete" here means that the points are separate and well-defined, as opposed to overlapping.
