The and singular noun

Hello,

I know we sometimes use 'the' + singluar noun to talk about a thing in general, for example:
  1. The rose is my favourite flower.
  2. The giraffe has a long neck.
If I use 'a' instead of 'the', is it a mistake?

3. A rose is my favourite flower.

4. A giraffe has a long neck.

What about these sentences:

5. One of the most popular pets is the/a dog.

6. When we have a dog it is good to have a huge garden. (i think 'the' woudn't be correct here)

Do we use 'the' + singular noun only to talk about animals, plants, machines, inventions and musical instruments in general?

Thank you for your help!
