The "and" Comma

Sometimes I really get confused as to whether I should put a comma before "and" or not. Take this example:

One hot summer night, John and Cathy were feeling somewhat bored, and thought it was about time that they introduce themselves to Mary Dell.

Should there be a comma after "bored?"

Thanks.

Snarf One hot summer night, John and Cathy were feeling somewhat bored and thought it was about time that they introduce themselves to Mary Dell. " I say no. Because the part of the sentence that starts and ends with the underlined words appears to be related, it should not be separated by a comma.

  • Snarf One hot summer night, John and Cathy were feeling somewhat bored and thought it was about time that they introduce themselves to Mary Dell.
  • " I say no.
  • Because the part of the sentence that starts and ends with the underlined words appears to be related, it should not be separated by a comma.
  • Those are two 'actions' by the (same) subjects of the sentence.

When 'and' joins two standalone sentences, you should put a comma before it.

The female applicant must be able to tell jokes and sing, and she must be
able to dance. (correct)
("The female applicant must be able to tell jokes and sing." + "She must be
able to dance." - comma required)

The female applicant must be able to tell jokes, sing, and dance. (incorrect)

No, this is correct. The serial comma is just a style choice. It's not a matter of AmE or BrE.
