The and Apostrophe Conflict

Hello. I am using an equation which is known by its developer's name. I guess I should not put "the" before the phrase, right? I mean I should write "Shannon's equation" and not "the Shannon's equation".

I have seen the second one in a number of texts, though.

Thank you.

  • Normally, 'the' is not used in such phrases.
  • Maybe the write has explained it earlier in the text, so he may give references back to that definition by using 'the' this time.
