The narrator recalls his adolescence.
The seamstress, Mr. Omer's apprentice Em'ly fled with the narrator's best friend Steerforth to London, leaving her fiance.
The narrator stopped by Mr. Omer's the next night, and he talked to his daughter Mrs. Joram because Mr. Omer went to bed.
And Mrs. Joram spoke so ill of Em'ly that the narrator said, "Don't say so."
