The analyses of a text #3

A royal family member of Amber, the protagonist can travel through Shadows, the parallel worlds of Amber.
He had taken his girlfriend in the earth to Shadows for several times once.
And then she asked him for the explanation of that novel experience.
.....................
He now thinks about the then situation.

.....................
I would rather we parted without her. possessing this knowledge. Later, much later, I was to see this for the rationalization it was; my real reason for denying her the answers she desired was that I was not ready to trust her, or anyone, so close to me as I really am. Had I known her longer, better?another year, say?I might have answered her. I don't know.

I'd like to know if "was to see" represents predetermination.
I'd like to know if "this" indicates "my real reason."
I'd like to know if the underlined clause means "he trusted nobody at that time."
Thank you in advance for your help.
