If so, I was wondering if "in their special selves" is omitted after "abilities."
2. I'd like to know if the underlined clauses and phrase mean "although the battle is reaching longer distances, if the heroes deals powerful attacks together."

1. The battles follow the heroes as they are doing various things: fighting ... gaining .. recovering ... obtaining ... . None of the "-ing" forms have explicit grammatical subjects, but the implied subject of all is "heroes".

I think that "obtaining special abilities" happens after they have transformed, so in that sense "in their special [= transformed
