The following is the synopsis of a tv show, American Horror Story season 4 - Freak Show.

The story takes place in 1952 in the quiet town of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jupiter,_Florida and follows a struggling https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freak_show led by Elsa Mars (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jessica_Lange). Decades have passed since the public has looked upon freak shows as a form of entertainment, but Elsa dreams of finding a home for her "monsters", as well as her own fame. When conjoined twins Bette and Dot Tattler (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarah_Paulson) are taken to the hospital, Elsa sees her chance to finally drum up some business for her sideshow, hoping the two sisters will save her troupe once and for all. Other members include Jimmy Darling (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evan_Peters), a boy born with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syndactyly who dreams of leaving the carny life behind and living a normal life. Jimmy's mother, the bearded lady Ethel Darling (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kathy_Bates), is Elsa's second in command and maintains law and order under the tent. A Strongman from Ethel's troubled past named Dell Toledo (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Chiklis), and his three-breasted wife, Desiree Dupree (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angela_Bassett), make waves when they arrive at the sideshow. Two evil characters of the story are Stanley (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denis_O%27Hare) and Maggie Esmerelda (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emma_Roberts), who want to kill the freaks for money. Gloria (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frances_Conroy) and Dandy Mott (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finn_Wittrock) also contribute to spoil the freak show. In a time when the era of television is beginning to reign high above sideshow acts, these individuals must overcome those who persecute them based on their looks. However, as events unfold, it is revealed that multiple dark entities have taken up residence in Jupiter, with all of their eyes being set on the freaks. The main recurring theme throughout this season is acceptance, examples being the freaks' need to be accepted by the people of Jupiter and Dandy's desire to become a freak and to be accepted as a freak. Flashbacks are set in the 1930s and 1940s, and a flash forward to the 1960s.

1. I'd like to know if "from Ethel's troubled past" modifies "named."
2. I'd like to know the implied subject of "based on their looks" is "a standard of judgment."
3. And I'd like to know why it is "examples being the freaks' need," not "examples of the freaks' need."
Here I think "examples being the freak's need" is a gerund phrase.

Thank you in advance for your help.
