The analyses of a text

The protagonist with amnesia visited his nominal sister.

I followed, up three stairs and down a corridor past two closed doors. The third one to my left was open, and the maid indicated I should enter it. I did so, then paused on the threshold.

I have three question.
First, I'd like to know if I can use "up" in place of "down" in "down a corridor."
Next, I'd like to know what "should" means in "the maid indicated I should enter it."
Finally, I'd like to know if I can rephrase "and natural, I somehow knew" as "and I somehow knew it was natural."
Thank you in advance for your help.
