The analyses of a text.

Part of the beauty of SQ3R is its flexibility. It's a system that can be modified to suit the material. Say you are reading a chapter that separates passages with numbered questions. If this is the case you would naturally make reading the questions part of your survey technique. Similarly, if marginal notes appear throughout the chapter, you would automatically use them to formulate questions to guide your reading. The rule of thumb is a simple one: Always adapt SQ3R to the material at hand, adding, modifying, or eliminating steps where appropriate.

1. I'd like to know why "to" is used, not "for."
2. I'd like to know if I can interpret "adding, modifying, or eliminating steps" as "by adding, modifying, or eliminating steps."

adapt X to Y is probably used after the models adjust X to Y; apply X to Y. However, adapt X for Y is not impossible; it just seems like a more indirect relationship.
