The analyses of a text #1

The narrator recalls his adolescence.
He is an apprentice of the proctor, Mr. Spenlow.
He visited Mr. Spenlow's place, and because he fell for his daughter at at first sight, he didn't hear nothing and noticed the presence of another woman when he was introduced to his daughter Dora and her confidential friend, Miss muderstion, the narrator's ill-tempered step-father's elder sister.
After dinner, he and Miss Murdstone agree that they will conceal their past relationship and unfavorable opinions of each other.

................................
'But it is not necessary,' said Miss Murdstone, 'that these opinions should come into collision here. Under existing circumstances, it is as well on all accounts that they should not. As the chances of life have brought us together again, and may bring us together on other occasions, I would say, let us meet here as distant acquaintances. Family circumstances are a sufficient reason for our only meeting on that footing, and it is quite unnecessary that either of us should make the other the subject of remark. Do you approve of this?'
[David Copperfield by Charles Dickens]

I suppose you'd have to say it means (literally) "equally", though as an idiom, we don't always take it to be "equal", but rather "better".

It is (just) as well for us not to speak of certain things.
