The analyses of a text #1

The narrator recalls his childhood.
He was forced to work for his own living for Mr. Murdstone's friend Mr. Quinion at London by his stepfather Mr. Murdstone.
He lodges at a house, the master of which Mr. Micawber is so very poor, and goes to his work Murdstone and Grinby's.
At last Mr. Micawber was imprisoned in the King's Bench Prison for his dept.

.......................................
By way of going in fro anything that might be on the cards, I call to mind that Mr. Micawber, about this time, composed a petition to the House of Commons, praying for an alteration in the law of imprisonment for debt. I set down this remembrance here because it is an instance to myself of the manner in which I fitted my old books to my altered life, and made stories for myself, out of the streets, and out of men and women, and how some main points in the character I unconsciously develop, I suppose, in writing my life, were gradually forming all this while.
[David Copperfield by Charles Dickens]
I'd like to know if "how" modifies "some" or "unconsciously."
If the later, I was wondering why "some main points in the character" is fronted.
And I'd like to know "how some main points in the character I unconsciously develop" is a subject of "were."
Thank you in advance for your help.

Sort of; 'how' is often used to mean simply 'that' and not much more.
