The analyses of a sentence

The protagonist is a royal family member of Amber.
He can teleport himself somewhere using magical cards-Trump, which means the very cards or to use the cards.
George and Meg are his acquaintances in the earth.

George's behavior had been overtly weird, at the end there. What had been bothered me was that he'd seemed to know who I really was and to know about Amber?and he even wanted to follow me through a Trump. It was if he and Meg had both been subjected to same strange manipulation.

["Trumps of Doom" of The Great Book of Amber by Roger Zelazny]

I'd like to know if "as" is omitted before "if."

I have been taught the word "same" always goes with the definite article "the."
So I was wondering why "the" is missing before "same."

Thank you in advance for your help.

" Yes, it's a mistake. There should be "as" there. " That's another mistake; the definite article should have been used.
