The analyses of a clause

The protagonist is one of Amber's princes. His brother Bleys is ascending the narrow stairway only one man can stand on, attacking and knocking down a row of enemies.

He was good, even better than I remembered him to be. He advanced like a whirlwind, and his blade was alive with light. They fell before it?how they fell, my friend! Whatever else you might say of Bleys, on that day he acquitted himself as became his rank. I wondered how long he could keep going.
[Nine Princes in Amber" of The Great Book of Amber by Roger Zelazny]
I'd like to know what "he acquitted himself as became his rank" means and what structure it has.
Thank you in advance for your help.

"become" = to be appropriate; befit (http://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/become)

He acquitted himself in a way that was appropriate to his rank; i.e. presumably honourably, or something like that.
