The agony of high school dropouts?

Hello,

Please explain the meaning of this sentence in red:

Today we can understand why so many geniuses wrote about the passion of discovery and the joy of learning. We can appreciate also the agony of high school dropouts who internalize "failure."

The sentence doesn't make sense to me and has no connection to the previous one, beside I want to know who is "who" in that sentence.

Thank you.
