The act of looking in doorways/down alleys

Hi,
I believe there's a word for the act of looking in doorways, down alleys, or through otherwise unseen places.

it's a nice thing, not voyeurism or being a peeping tom. Someone I know said Bill Bryson used it in one of his books but I can't find it anywhere. Can anyone help?
