The / a in these sentences

I found these two that are bit hard to understand in particular "a" in advanced grammar in use.

1. That was a winter I`ll never forget(=compared to other winters it was unforgettable)

2. That was the winter we went to Norway(=a statement aout a particular winter).

() = explanations added in the book

I cought the meaning "the" .. in 1 but a in 1... shouldn`t it be the?? if it should be the meaning in the bracket.
