The / a in these sentences

Question

I found these two that are bit hard to understand in particular "a" in advanced grammar in use.

1. That was a winter I`ll never forget(=compared to other winters it was unforgettable)

2. That was the winter we went to Norway(=a statement aout a particular winter).

() = explanations added in the book

I cought the meaning "the" .. in 1 but a in 1... shouldn`t it be the?? if it should be the meaning in the bracket.

I assume you mean in 2?

"That was the winter I'll never forget" implies that this winter was unique in its "unforgettability".

"That was a winter I'll never forget", which is the more usual wording, implies that there may have been several unforgettable winters, and you're referring to an otherwise unidentified one of them. In fact, you may have experienced only one such winter, yet still use "a". Even so, the actual grammar allows the possibility that there has been more than one.
