The 2004 convention keynote and its aftermath

Hi is there any different between aftermath and consequences?
I didn't understand at all this phrase "out of the realm of pure theory"

"The 2004 convention keynote and its aftermath moved the possibility of an Obama run
for the White House out of the realm of pure theory."

Aftermath usually means 'bad consequences'. Move out of = take out of; remove from realm = area pure theory = theory only (no practicality)
