The?

Hi
"Where are leaders?" (complaining that there're no more leaders)
"Where are Americans?" (complaining there're no more Americans)

there seems something wrong with these questions...I think there should be a definite article before leaders and Americans...i don't know why

But I have no problem with
"What happened to leaders?"
"What happened to Americans?"
