The

When I go to the cinema, I prefer to sit in the front row. I think 'the' is unnecessary right? Because it means any cinema, right? So, why is the used? With what meaning?

We use 'the' with the name of some 'institutions' when are actually more interested in the activity than the building.

"When I go to the cinema" conveys the idea of "when I go to see a film".

So, we go to the pub (for a drink), the bank (to pay in some money), the library (to take out some books), etc.
