'the'

"A brooklyn native and the son of a police officer, Cassano was known for his organization skills, not his acumen in finance."

Why did the author use "the" before son? Would it have been okay to use "a"?

It is better to use the definite article. The writer is talking about one particular person, not a person in general. It does not imply that he has no brothers, only that his father is a police officer.
