Question

Hi all,Could someone explain me the proper use of "the article"...Because there is no article used in my native language(turkish), I for some reason have problem in using "the" properly......Thanks in advance....Nil.

Welcome to this forum! I'm an English leaner from Japan.

My language (Japanese) too doesn't have such a thing like 'the'. Likewise, as far as I know, Chinese do not use 'the'. Russians too, they do not use 'the' despite the fact the Russian language belongs to Indo-European languages. Furthermore, Old English speakers in the ancient British kingdoms didn't use 'the' so often as current English speakers do. It seems the use of 'the' in English developed and prevailed during the Medieval Age. In my opinion, we can freely communicate without using such a thing like 'the', of which usage is too tough for us learners to get.

But anyway they are using 'the', and so we have to learn its usage. The rule of the usage of 'the' is very complicated in details, but I think its essence is: Use 'the' when you think your hearer also knows what is being talked about.
