That/this/it/she

Hi,

Have a look at this sentence please.

This person texted me and introduced herself/themselves as XYZ. I thought that it/that/she/this was Cathy.

Which one should I use? I'd say herself and it/that but I'm not sure if in this case it could be used when talking about a person.

I am presuming that you know that the person is female. This person texted me and introduced herself as XYZ. I thought that she was Cathy.

How come we can use it when referring to people?

We do in some instances, as on the phone:

A: Hello, who is this?
B: It's Cathy.
