That/This

I saw a guy on TV enjoying his meal? I think it was a plate of fried rice or something. He said "That is good."

Why was it "that" not "this" when he referred to the thing at hand?

What could be the difference between "That is good" and "This is good" in such a situation?

Top answer

This is good. It's still here, on my plate. That was good .

  • That was good .
  • It's not here anymore.

It is good English but it is not the usual way of putting it. You can imagine he is referring to his wife's effort at cooking and not to the dish itself. "What you have done here is delicious."
