That went "BONGGGG"

Can you please explain "that went "BONGGGG""? Does it mean "that its sounds is "BONGGGG"?


The Addams family would summon Lurch by pulling on the bell cord, which would ring a bell--supposedly like those in the photo above, but actually a great gong that went "BONGGGG". The bell cord, as befitted the macabre humor in the TV series (which originated in the macabre cartoons of Charles Addams that appeared in the NEW YORKER magazine in the '30s, '40s, and '50s and even later) ended in a hangman's noose.
