That was the first time he (had) visited New York?

NO 81

I'd be happy if someone would answer my question. Thanks in advance.

Of the following 3 sentences (A, B, and C), which is the same in meaning as D / E?

D: That was his first visit to New York.

E: That was the first time he (had) visited New York?

A: He visited New York for the first time that time.

B: He visited New York for the first time on that day.

C: He visited New York for the first time on that occasion.

If none of these is the same in meaning as D / E, please write the right sentence using "He visited New York for the first time".

Top answer

There is no reason why all of A, B and C could not be synonymous with D and E. The only reservation I have is that B specifies ' day '.

  • There is no reason why all of A, B and C could not be synonymous with D and E.
  • The only reservation I have is that B specifies ' day '.

--I see your explanation well. But how about this one? --- He was visiting New York for the first time that day [on that occasion]. Does this sentence express the same situation as the above sentences?

One more question----- Are these sentences the same in meaning?

C: This is the first time he has visited New York.

D: Today he is visiting New York for the first time.

'That day' and 'today' are different days.

--I see. But what I'd like to ask is whether A is the same as B in meaning.

A: This is the first time he has visited New York.

B: Today he is visiting New York for the first time.

Probably; context will tell.

AnonymousA: This is the first time he has visited New York.

B: Today he is visiting New York for the first time.

In sentence A the subject is already in New York and may have already been there for some time.
In sentence B the visit started/will start today.
