That or Which?

Hi teachers,

Here is a multiple choice question.

An image has been released __ shows the hairy moment __ the Philae comet lander bounced back into space.

A) which / when
B) that / which
C) that / when
D) that / that
E) --- / that

I think there are more than one correct answer in this question but the author says there is only one correct answer. I think B and D are both correct. What do you think?

Top answer

I'd guess C. 'moment when' A and D are OK. B and E are impossible.

  • I'd guess C.
  • 'moment when' A and D are OK.
  • B and E are impossible.
  • B says that the lander bounced the hairy moment back into space.
  • We can't have that!

The author is, and you are partly correct.

There is indeed more than one correct answer. Of the alternatives given, A), C), D) are all possible. Other combinations are also fine:

which / that
which / ---
that / ---

An image has been released which/that shows the hairy moment that/when/--- the Philae
