That of

Example: His strength was the strength of knowledge.

Is it possible to avoid this repetition and say: His strength was that of knowledge. Can 'that of' be used in such cases to avoid repetition? His sorrow was that of loneliness (instead of: his sorrow was the sorrow of loneliness).
