Which is correct:

1) I thought if I am going to write that length of a letter, I might as well make a recording of it and send it to you instead of having you read it.

2) I thought if I am going to write a letter that long, I might as well make a recording of it and send it to you instead of having you read it.

Very small point: The combination "I thought if" is strange to my ear. My personal opinion is that this doesn't sound exactly right without the "that". I thought that if am ... I believe I would put in "that" whenever a subordinating conjunction followed.
