That is all she wrote

Hi

I heard this idiom today: That is all she wrote.
Then a simiar one occured to me: She will be apples.
My question is related to their usages.

Is the first idiom correctly used in this conversation?

A: Did you manage to complete your English course yet?
B: No, that is all she wrote.
A: So sad.

'That she, it does not apply to female individuals, right?
But then, what are the origins of these idioms?

Thanks

That's all she wrote has nothing to do with women per se-- it is a fixed phrase meaning 'that's all; that's the end'. " Who was "she," and why did she decide or have to stop writing? Was it some Jane Austen/Emily Dickinson why-do-I-have-to-call-myself-George-Eliot-just-to-get-published type of pre-Women's Suffrage male oppression deal?

You might check out the 1950 song by Hank Williams, "Dear John". Is there any earlier reference to it in writing? He uses the phrase as a refrain to the news that his woman has split and taken him to the cleaners in a Dear John-type note. Could be that the song was popular and from there the saying "that's all she wrote" caught on for "the end".
