That didn't mean vs. That doesn't mean

Hi, I'm not sure what is the correct grammar for a sentence:
I might’ve had enough brains to outweigh all six of them. But that didn’t mean this was going to be a pleasant encounter. ?
I might’ve had enough brains to outweigh all six of them. But that doesn't mean this was going to be a pleasant encounter.

This is being written in the first person, talking about any event that happened. I think it's the first, and "didn't" is correct, but it still doesn't quite sound right to me. Please let me know which it is.
