That and Which

Hi,

"The reference is to the idea that style is a quality that is discernible from and which varies with group activity."

I do not understand why two different rel. pronouns are used in the above sentence. Could they both be "that" or "which" ?

Yes, and they should be. It is poor style to mix them. However, the second could just be omitted: a quality that/ which is discernible from and varies with group activity
