There is a sentence I saw as below:
But that you may know that the son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins...
Question 1: What does "that" refer to? I think it is useless in grammar here.
Question 2: What is the meaning of "may"? It seems not possiblity here. I think it means " can" or " will", so I am confused.
