Grammar

'That'

Example:I cleaned all the rooms. Besides that, I cooked a delicous dinner before their arrival.

I understand the word 'that' in the example is not necessary. But is it considered a grammatical error if 'that' is after 'besides' as in the example?

Thanks.

No, the example is fine. Further, you could not use "besides" if it was not followed by "that" (which is short for the action performed earlier). "Besides" requires a comparison.

You could. if you wished, combine the sentences. For example:

Besides cleaning all the rooms, I also cooked a delicious meal before they arrived.

I hope this helps.
