Vocabulary

That

Hi,

I am reading a novel and I am not sure what this "that" mean in the sentence, what is its role, what is it modifying?

Here it says," He thought for a moment that it would be better to pay her fee and leave without learning a thing, that he was giving too much importance to his recurrent dream."

Can this that go after "a moment" in the sentence, which says," He thought for a moment that he was giving too much importance to his recurrent dream"?

thanks

Yes, it is just a parallel clause: He thought...that it would be better...thing (and) that he was giving too much...dream.
